Don't be fooled by the name Bread and Butter (although they do sell butter - Pepe Saya Handmade amongst others - and fresh loaves of bread), this modern day corner store packs a stylish punch amongst the Eastern suburbs. The shelves are neatly organised with chic and considered products for the home - gourmet goodies to tickle anyone's tastebuds - even Rover is covered with dog food available.

You can tell the brains behind this operation have made sure that while there is plenty of choice there isn't unnecessary decisions to be made - unlike a supermarket (let's say one that rhymes with Poles) you aren't bombarded with decision overload (it's a serious condition, kids, Wiki that stuff!) Plus, you know the products that have made it to the shelf are exceptional and worth taking home to your own pantry.

Come in for one thing, leave with ten more. For example, seedlings from The Little Vege Patch, cleaning products from Murchison Hume, chocolate by Conscious Chocolate Australia. What's that? Forgot a card for your Mum's birthday/ friend's farewell / insert occassion here. Well you can even pick up a card designed by letterpress gods The Hungry Workshop.

Walking into Bread and Butter (a part of the Brother Espresso family) was like walking into my ideal pantry and I dare any lover of food, or packaging for that matter, not to fall head over heels for this take on a general store.

Brother Espresso is branching out! Bread & Butter is a hipster's general store, with some crazy good-looking treats inside. There's a lot of coffee bits and pieces at the front of the store, if you're interested in pumping out Brother-worthy coffee in your own home.

It's the "gourmet providore" shtick that hooks me in, though. Weird and wonderful things live on the Bread & Butter shelves. Rainbow pasta? Check. Wasabi mayonnaise? Check. Stradbroke Island honey, fresh olive oil and vinegar poured out from vats for each customer? Check. There are some delicious cold items in the fridges, too - I couldn't go past some yoghurt, but it was a tough decision between Barambah Organics' Real Cherry or The Collective's Russian Fudge (the latter ended up winning out, but I'LL BE BACK FOR YOU, CHERRY).

It's not all edible - it's a general store, after all. There are some cleaning products and rad-looking pomades (I'm a sucker for packaging) to be bought, as well as trendy magazines and (I think I remember seeing) some stationery(?).

But back to the foodstuffs. There's delicious fresh bread on display - to go with that fresh olive oil and balsamic? Maybe pick up a tub of dukkah to add to the mix, while you're at it. Then on my way out the door, I couldn't resist picking up a small block of Conscious Chocolate. There are even a couple of tubs of lollies, just like the old corner store (though I don't expect they'd fill a paper bag for 5c).

Basically, next time I decide to have a fancy picnic, I'm doing my shopping at Bread & Butter. Now I just need a decent excuse to have a fancy picnic.

A small general shore attached to the Brothers Espresso, it carries some unique products such as Marvis toothpaste (by the way, per Marvis' website, Bread & Butter is the ONLY retail store front you can get it in ALL of Queensland), 'exotic chocolate bars', aeropress coffee devices, stationary cards, "bottle yer own" olive oil/balsamic vinegar/honey, and your expected bread and butter.  I also see they carry Lick! ice cream and the Goat Guy Pies in the refrigerated section towards the back.

It is a great spot to check out for gifts for the coffee-lover and bread-lover.  I'm sure there's other things suitable for other kinds-lovers. Or perhaps to stock up for an imprompto picnic.
