Edinburgh is a joy for many reasons - but one of them is that Yelp is King there, just like in the USA!! By comparison England needs a big boost (I am trying but I need more help folks....).
Anyway back to WofM. We found it on Yelp and it was just around the corner from our AirBNB. It has been around for about a decade and is basically not much more than a hole in the wall. Disregard appearances from across the street - it maybe a bit dark inside but it is clean and the staff upbeat. They serve only breakfast and lunch. We took breakfast - both the coffee and the full breakfast were good and good value for money. I understand why they don't open for dinner - soooo many good options in Edinburgh. However would I recommend for breakfast or all day lunch (I uploaded a pic of the menu) YES!
If I am back in Edinburgh and close then I will definitely revisit

This was our favorite meal while visiting Edinburgh. We wanted to try a classic Scottish breakfast and found Word of Mouth through good 'ol Yelp.
It's outside of the main tourist belt and it felt and looked very much like a local coffee shop. I was surprised to see that they had a little grill behind the counter where they do all the cooking.
We enjoyed the Full Breakfast and the Veggie Breakfast. They'll definitely fill you up, but we found them to be just the right amount and not food-coma-inducing. I was a big fan of the veggie sausage, grilled tomatoes, and haggis!
Don't skip the haggis. I was pretty reluctant to try it (if you don't know what it is, Google it and you'll be reluctant too), but it's tasty! It tastes like a combination of blood sausage and black beans. Maybe that's a weird combo, but it's good. Try it, damnit!
Sorry, anyway. It's a nice spot for breakfast and doesn't feel touristy, though it's interesting that most of the reviews are from tourists. Regardless of who's eating there, it doesn't seem to get jam packed like some of the other spots in town. Give it a try!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Tracy S.Manhattan, United States78211228 Dec 2018
Come here for: casual coffee vibes set to trendy 80s music
Food: had the full English breakfast, solid is the word here! They roast their own coffee here, I had tea though :-) . My breakfast mate had the chai and she said it was great!!
Service: super good!! Friendly, fast!
Decor: cute coffee shop, wooden tables, 80s jamsHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Catherine Y.New York, United States4427911624 July 2019
Came here for a full breakfast! The food was tasty and prepared quickly, but they didn't have haggis which I had hoped to try as a tourist. The only thing I found a bit strange was that on the menu, they very strictly stated that no alterations could be made to any of the menu items (like swapping poached eggs for scrambled eggs, or something) which is a bit uncommon for brunch places. The crossaint my friend ordered a bit stale. Other than that, good!

These are the kind of coffee shops/bistros that I search for when travelling as a nomad.
There's free WiFi (look up, above the window for the code), dogs welcome, friendly service, a few plugs, small and quaint yet room to move, solid chairs and tables at a good height (really important for a writer!), food options that don't include bread or grains.
It's right off the walk of Leith, around the corner from where I'm staying (uni housing turned into a hotel of sorts in the summer months), and has a lovely view.
Add quick service, a great all day breakfast, non-chain, and I'm hooked.
Why not five stars? Trying to reserve them for truly exceptional experiences... I may up it yet. ;)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Stephanie Z.Richmond, Canada10341111 July 2018
Just had breakfast here this morning. Coffee beans roasted on site and breakfast cooked to order. Server was super friendly and especially attentive to visitors, chatting away and making us feel unrushed.
I ordered the croque monsieur and a cappucino. The serving is huge and I couldn't finish it all. Regardless, the sandwich was hot off the grill. The bread was a bit too thick for my taste, and I think the croque bacon would be much more my taste. The bread was a grain style bread that was delish!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ashley M.Philadelphia, United States569723110 Mar 2018Updated review
Simple, tasty food--exactly what we were hoping for, but the space is quite small, which made the cafe a bit uncomfortable. The service was also slow.

Great corner cafe for breakfast, coffee, or a snack. Came here twice during our few days in Edinburgh because it was so good. And it wasn't just the food, the workers were super nice and welcoming!
We found this place thanks to Yelp, but the locals we rented from suggested it after we had already been here. A must visit!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Damian O.Saddle Brook, United States062365 Jan 2018
We had a lovely brunch at the word of mouth.
Hospitality was first class, as was the food.
I went back and got take out the following day and even though the chef was on his own and under a bit of pressure he was a gentleman and didn't rush me on my order. Great brunch experienceHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nicholas S.Victoria317930 Jan 2016
Location: crighton place
Venue: small cafe but cozy
Food: croque madame and big breakfast. Both were very large and very tasty
Service: maybe a little understaffed but very friendly. Not a big issue
Verdict: great little cafe. Worth a visit. They have huge coffees.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
