Absolutely recommend coming to Werribee open range zoo. It is really easy to get to from Melbourne. You can take a train from Flinders Street station direct to Werribee after you get off the train stop at Werribee, there is a bus that runs to the zoo. They run pretty frequently on the weekend and are always filled with tourists going to the zoo or the mansion. During the weekday, the bus runs hourly, so make sure you check out the schedule or it is really easy to grab an Uber from the train station as an alternative.
The highlight of this zoo absolutely has be the safari. If you go during peak times or on the weekends, there's going to be a very long line to go on the safari. It is very similar to the animal kingdom safari if you have gone to Disneyland in the states. You get to see a variety of animals in their natural habitat and learn a lot of fun facts about the zoo one of my favorite fun facts was that the Water buffalo smell absolutely terrible.
Food options aren't great at the zoo but you can get a burger and some good coffee. There are some nice spots to eat by the train station so maybe build in some time to stop there before heading home.
TLDR definitely worth a visit. You can also expand your trip and go to the mansion. Really easy and fun day trip from Melbourne.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Wayne B.Hoppers Crossing Victoria0131 Aug 2023
Great safari, quiet a few animals were asleep. So missed out on experiencing this.
Night safari seems fun but a bit pricy.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 21 Sept 2021
This isn't one of the largest zoo in Australia, but it is still a decent size so that you can spend a good amount of time wandering around. The good thing about this zoo is that it is quite close to the city, and you can actually get here on public transport, though I have discovered that the bus doesn't really run all that often, which I have to admit it a bit of a shame. Still, it is a pretty nice zoo, and they have a good collection of animals. The other thing is that I did find that it was somewhat more interactive than some of the other zoos that I have visited, and certainly it does make for a good day out.

The zoos Victoria are amazing for if you have children or if you just like animals! And I will be honest and say that this is my least favourite of the 3 zoos. The animals here are not very active and spend mos of the day sitting around. Unlike Healesville sanctuary and Melbourne zoo. The interactive experiences and shows don't go for that long and aren't that interactive at all.
One of the highlights is the bus ride. The announcer does a great job in describing and talking about different aspects of the animals and environment. Another highlight is the hippo exhibition. The hippos are definitely the most active of the animals, the best thing about this zoo are the events. The dinosaur one was the second best (last being Melbourne zoo and Healesville being the 1st).
GREAT EXPERIENCE.
if you had kids, this would be the best zoo to go to in victoria. I quite enjoyed the information and would go here around 5 more times before getting bored!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lex B.Melbourne Victoria14267615 Sept 2016
Had on wet day but still had fun One of the best Zoo's I've been to. The safari tour is great and on a hot summers day it can kind of feel like your in Africa.
Is very open format zoo More room for the animals. Zoo's that feel cramped with animals that look sad and 'trapped'. Werribee has the lots for all ages.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Dev D.Fort Lauderdale, United States158911514 Nov 2016
I had arrived Friday to visit your park. When I went to purchase 2 tickets, the woman told me it was $30, which was perfectly fine. Once I ran my credit card, she hands me the tickets and says the last bus leaves now so hurry and go straight there and then you only have an hour and a half by the time the park closes. I asked her if I could just exchange the tickets for tomorrow since there's no time and she didn't tell me until I paid, and she said no. By the time we finished the bus ride, we had 30 minutes to walk and see the "animals" who were not there because they were put away. I'm from America and I wanted to have a nice time at the zoo and see many animals, including kangaroos, which didn't happen. I think it's very rude that she told me after I paid that we had no time for anything and refused to change our tickets.
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE! The only nice thing was the fact animals have a ton of open range to live like they should. Other than that, it was terrible.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sarah F.Melbourne Victoria12414713120 July 2013
This Open Range Zoo has become my favourite of the Zoos Victoria location just after the first visit.
The views of the herbivore bus tour is amazing. You really get to come up close and personal with giraffes, rhinos, zebras, ostriches, and many other animals. They even may walk across in front of the bus and stop the tour. The tour guides are quite knowledgeable and know the names of some of the animals as well as super interesting facts like a Rhinos horn is made out of hair! I didn't know there were different types of stripes on Zebras but now I do!
Once you move on to view all the other animals, you get to see all the other animals. We were lucky to see an animal show on the Serval that showed exactly what they can do and we got to see the three lions really up close! Such an amazing view of such majestic creatures.
Zoos don't normally bring the kid out in me but this one did! On top of the wonderful animal viewing there's heaps of other activities and play areas throughout the zoo, including a Meerkat enclosure next to the cafe so you can watch the Meerkats do their stuff while enjoying a lovely meal!
Needless to say, I've become a zoo member and will be going back there again soon!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mary C.Perth Western Australia524528921 Jan 2016
The bus ride is the best part of visiting this zoo as you get to see the animals in their element. You also get to get up close with these animals as some approached the bus. They also have a baby hippo and lion cubs that you should definitely check out.
