Egi is his name and restaurant.
So who is a Egi? Well he is the owner, chef, waiter, desk person, host and everything else in between. The ultimate Del-boy from "only fools and horses" trying to save a buck from every angle.
Legend has it he once worked in Nandos where some believe he learnt his craft as a grills men. Others say he was fired from TGIFRIDAYS due to laziness. Whatever the story, he knows how to grill!
This must be the best, cheap secret in Newcross. This is because no one in their right mind would choose to come into this place unless it was STRONGLY recommended. Now looking back I am truely happy my work college in blackheath three years ago strongly recommended this place to me.
The decor, rubbish. The layout, appalling. The ambience, lacking even the service is rarely a hit and more of a miss. The one thing that matters and counts is the food and he sure knows how to put it down on that grill cooker in the kitchen.
Key about this place is getting past the look and ambience to sit in and order something grilled. The food is like a Nandos but with the option of lamb beef and fish so you could say it is like an American easy dinner to some extent.
Egi himself is a typical African man hitting on anything that moves, he really has no shame. Be aware females, he will hit on you if your with your girl friends, boyfriend and even your mother is not safe! But he is really harmless and a lot of west Africans really get his humour as this behaviour is normal from typical West African men that like to behave like they are hungry for women.
Looking at the food in more detail I would advise the combo meal, which is my favourite as I am a serial meat eater, also, if you don't get something grilled then you are just simply missing out. The combo will allow you to have pork, chicken, Chips/rice sweet corn and homemade creamy coleslaw. This is around £6.50 which goes up or down depending how good Egi's mathematical skills are on the day and it always changes when you add more to your menu. I always edit his combo meal and substitute the pork for lamb for £2 more but like I said this depends on his maths skills on the day.
All your grilled food is served on iron black skillet plates that are presented on carved wooden boards and you really do here that sizzle and pop of the food along with the grill smell before you see it. When you see the size on your plate and have your first bite you say to yourself what's the point if going Nandos if you get more here for your money. Also, ask Egi about his sources and the biggest hit is he's whiskey glaze source. The combination of honey, whiskey and whatever the other secret ingredient items he puts in is absolutely amazing. This poured on to your sizzling meats is just simply OMG!
He also sells chicken wings, burgers, steaks etc. he literally tries to do it all. I only found out recently he does delivery and asked him who is your delivery man (looking back was a dumb question at the time) which he laughed and replied he was.
This is not a place you would ever think about walking when you are in Newcross Gate and queens road Peckham, but if someone ever does recommend it to you then you are in for a real treat.
For those that enjoy a carnivorous lead protein hit at cheap and reasonable prices that can somehow still serve quality then Egi's is a good Newcross local in the southeast London area that will be hard to beat.
Despite the highly rated review he only gets a 4 star due to his serial womanising antics.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Viet-Anh H.London, United Kingdom121938620 Jan 2009First to Review
Egi's is awesome! Now I rarely rave about places but this is a real hidden gem.
Seating around 21 people (four tables of four and one table of three), first impressions of this place may not look like much, but the all-star chef Egi - the one man band who takes orders, cooks, serves and takes payment is just great!
The jerk combo which comes with a huge piece of jerk chicken, a big piece of pork, chips or spicy rice, the BEST sweetcorn ever (you have got to try it - even if you don't like sweetcorn - Egi's recipe will convert you), coleslaw and his unique spicy sauce is terrific value at just £6.
It comes out on this huge sizzling platter which helps to keep the food hot, and with a tv up front it means you'll usually catch some footy game.
If you eat here, you won't regret it.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (lrosen…)London, United Kingdom0419 Mar 2010
I agree with Marble Girl. Egi's is a real treasure. We've only done delivery but it is fast and wonderful. Food was memorable, the chicken tender and tasy and inexpensive. Highly recommend Egi to anyone looking for great takeaway!
