Duke Of York

Nice pub for eating: towards the end of the road so a little bit quieter than most, and would have good harbour views in the daytime (I was there in the dark).
Food was standard pub menu but the quality was good. Beer was fine.

A classic pubby pub with great views over the harbour.

I enjoyed a nice relaxed half a cider here while taking a break from the blistering sunshine (no joke)! The pub was rammed as it was a really sunny Saturday in July but we managed to get a table. There's a real mix of people here and I enjoyed a bit of people watching ie being nosy. I didn't eat here but the food looked pretty decent. Prices were reasonable too. The views really are great.

Lovely traditional fish & chips, also a nice selection of other meals. Good range of drinks to go with the food as well.

This is right at the far end of the cobbled street that runs along the top edge of the small market and makes for a nice stop if your out for a walk.
Don't know what the accommodation is like though as I am staying elsewhere.

We have dined at the Duke of York pub a few times as a family; in fact it is where we nornally go for dinner when visiting the town. I have always found the food to be of an excellent standard and great value, with a good selection on the menu, as well as a children's menu. However the last time we went there I was a little bit put-off! We visited this past summer and we had our baby son with us, who at the time was about five months old. We walked in with the baby in the buggy and were told that we couldn't bring the buggy in as it could be a fire hazard. I've never come across this one before, and it made us all wonder whether they would have the same attitude to wheelchair users! I explained to the waitress that we would therefore be needing a highchair in which to feed my son, so she duly went off to get one. What she came back with looked like something from the Dark Ages! It was one of those seats that you strap baby into which then attaches to a chair. However it was made of wood and looked very uncomfortable, not that it mattered anyway as my son couldn't keep his balance in it. We ended up with one of us holding him on our knee while the other fed him, which made it quite difficult to enjoy our meal! There were also no baby change facilities in the toilets, which i don't think is great for what's supposed to be a family pub (to be fair this has been the case in most other places we've visited with the baby).


I would strongly recommend the Duke of York for a pub lunch, but not if you have small children who need high chairs!

Another thing that isn't in short supply in Whitby are pubs, however we have found that it can be a problem finding a nice pub to eat in, The Duke of York is one of the most popular, and after visiting there for over 5 years, I can see why. It's at the bottom of the 199 steps and overlooks the harbour with some lovely window seats in there. Presuming you can get a seat, as some nights it's so packed people stand and wait for spaces, the menu has a reasonable number of choices on it, one of the famous dishes is the steak and ale pie that comes with chips, salad and peas and its so filling but ultra tasty. The pub itself really nice to sit and drink in with plenty of seafaring decorations and images of the Whitby and the prices are pretty reasonable too.

The Duke of York is a nice little pub in the old part of Whitby with views overlooking the harbour. We stopped off there for a pint and some lunch. I can throughly recommend their Hamburgher and Chips with all the trimmings! The food on offer was basic but tasty, well cooked and well presented. Not too expensive either for a seaside pub.

A very popular pub, with excellent views from the windows towards the harbour. A bit of a 'sidrat' (looks larger from outside than when inside). Beer, wine, spirits and food all reasonably priced makes this a good family (but not very young children) pub. Ideal for a meal lunch time or early evening.
