During my second visit to Berlin in July, I randomly stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant near the corner of Knaackstrasse and Rykestrasse (next to the Russian Pasternak). During my two-week stay in the city, I dined at 9 different Vietnamese eateries. If you walk around the Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg areas, you'll see that there's no shortage of Asian, and Vietnamese, specifically, restaurants. My taste for Vietnamese cuisine and its inherent flavor palette is very particular and I found most of these Berlin places to be of average or subpar quality (don't let the crowded seating areas fool you).

An Nam in Prenzlauer Berg, however, was absolutely fantastic--I went back again a few days later to confirm my initial experience. If you are in Berlin and in search of a great bowl of traditional Pho with the broth slow-simmered to perfection, you won't be disappointed here (and I can wholeheartedly recommend the spring and summer rolls as well). Looking forward to my next visit.

A couple of days in Berlin with my girlfriend to celebrate NYE and this is definitely the best place we've been for dinner!

We first ended up in an Argentinian place, but fortunately after checking the place on Yelp we decided to move to this Vietnamese place across the street.

Atmosphere is really authentic and nice. The waiter (who might as well also be the owner) is very friendly and patient. The quality of the food was surprisingly good, especially considering the price. Seldomly experienced such a great price vs quality ratio!

I would happilly recommend this place to anyone and will definitely return here the next time I'm in Berlin!

This is a good place, but, at a current rating of five straight stars, it seems a bit overrated.

I tried several of their vegetarian offerings: an organic vegetables and tofu dish that came recommended, and two of the soups, including vegetarian pho. It's good food, and well executed; the vegetables were obviously good quality and you can taste each of them individually. But it is a bit bland and it lacks the kind of freshness that is characteristic of the best vietnamese food.

I should add that I'm a vegetarian and that I had the impression that this place focuses on meat, despite having a number of vegetarian offerings. This would explain the low spice profile and the blandness. If you want to cook good vegetarian food, you cannot just rely on the flavors of the basic ingredients. You must use extra sauce and spices to bring out the full flavors of the vegetables. They don't seem to do that.

Overall, also considering that this place is more expensive than most vietnamese in P'berg, I'd try something else first.

This place was pretty weak. The food was bland, vegan options were very limited (non-existent without adjustments), and the price was very high for what we ordered. The service was decent and they were accommodating to a somewhat large party (4 adults and 2 children). The food is way overpriced and it's not much of a surprise to me why the joint was dead when we were there (we didn't see a single other customer).

We live around the corner from An Nam, and finally tried it out yesterday, but we were seriously disappointed at how little care went into our over-priced meals that tasted, honestly like fast-food (obviously heavy on the MSG). Would never go there again

I can see why this ppl leave 5*. The flavor is "salty" which is not authentic Vietnamese flavor. I had the papaya salad - 2*. Rice with pork chop - 3*. Vietnamese coffee 4*. Service is 5*. If you are looking for Vietnamese food, this is not the place. For coffee and good service, this is the place.
