I went here recently for the mini Oscars - it was my first time here. It took me back to the 90s when the world was full of Super Nintendo and Sega Mega drives!
It is such a cool and interesting place - there are 20 seats in the cinema so you need to make sure you book in advance if you want to secure a seat! There's a range of American candy on offer to buy and my favourite drink Kool-Aid - it takes me back to my childhood when I used to eat a lot of candy!! And the shop downstairs sells a range of vintage clothes. I need to come back and spend some time looking through the clothes. It really is a cool place and if you didn't know about it, you might just walk by without realising there's a cinema above. And they serve hot chocolate!! Go and see for yourself!

Cowabunga! Ring any bells? If yes, then it's likely you spent your youth playing Pac Man, eating pop-tarts and tuning into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Cheese TV. A tribute to all the cult classics from the late 80s and early 90s, this odd-ball shop covers all bases in fashion, film, art and food. A Point Blank arcade game confronts you at the door. Pac Men stickers decorate the walls and other archaic objects feature, like an old-school popcorn machine. There is a red bar displaying iconic sugary sweets like Junior Mints, Pop-Tarts and waffles with Marshmallow Fluff. The bar serves alcohol on event nights like their quirky Mario Cart Speed Dating. There's even a 20 seat microcinema upstairs. Even if you're not into retro gaming, venture in just to ignite some teenage nostalgia.

If you were thinking that Luna was Perth's underground cinema, you aren't even close. 1Up Microcinema, well isn't quite underground seeing how it's upstairs, but it is a 20 seat cinema which showcases local films, hosts film festivals and is a great venue for their themed nights and events which allows them to add a whole new aspect to include the big screen.

While upstairs is their microcinema, and also a games room with old school arcade games and classic Nintendo 64 and Sega available to play, which does take you back to your childhood no doubt. There is also their store downstairs, which sells vintage and quirky fashion which are a little more creative than your average clothing store. There is art work all over the walls referencing your favourite plumber, space invaders, and kong of the donkey variety, totally available to buy. A little bonus tip, if you see a film at the microcinema you can enjoy 20% off the clothing!

It's worth keeping your eye on what 1Up Microcinema are up to, you can friend them on facebook to keep in the loop, or just keep checking the website as they host some pretty sweet events, such as Mario Kart Speed Dating, and and NBA swap meet. So if you're pretty keen on your old school arcade games and films head here and meet up with some people who feel the same way!

This is such a great place, on first glance it looks like another clothes store with great items for sale. One rack even had a sign on it saying "Everything $32, to celebrate my 32nd Birthday!" which I think is so incredible and fits the relaxed honest and cool vibe of 1up. There appeared to be a kitchen kind of area but on closer inspection is a candy bar?! The friendly guy that owns it told me all about the 20 seat cinema up stairs and how if you book it for a night you and your guests get a free drink and candy bar item plus 20% off clothing. This place is so great with arcade games all around which you don't have to pay to play if you don't want to. Every month they hold a Mario kart speed dating night as well as film festivals. This is such a great idea and I will definitely be going there with a bunch of mates!

Oh William Street how much can I love thee? It's really crazy to think how much this street has taken off in the past four years. 1Up Microcinema is a mixed use space and yet another member of the William Street Collective. The upper level is the home of the Microcinema and art gallery and the ground level houses a fashion boutique. Threads for guys and gals, some of my favourite labels such as My Pet Square, Finders Keepers and Fairground are stocked here. Innovative to say the least, 1Up Microcinema even have a small bar license pending. Fashion, film and beverages oh my!

1Up is probably one of the coolest places I've ever been too. Part shop, part cinema, part video arcade and alternative dating service, it's one of the most innovative places in Perth, an otherwise conservative city. From the view of the street it looks like your regular trendy Northbridge haunt with a 90s nostalgia focus. True, they stock a cool range of clothing by Finders Keepers, My Pet Square and Mink Pink and clearly display their love for Pacman and Nintendo, but they really set themselves apart with their event nights. The February program starts soon and the first movie on the bill is a documentary about a Gothic Cruise. Beat that, Greater Union! You can even hire out the cinema upstairs for you friends, AND you get free beer!
